1. How Outdoor LED Lighting Works
An LED is a Light-Emitting Diode and a like other bulbs, creates light through forming an electrical circuit. The light is projected from a solid matter as opposed to a gas (fluorescent bulbs) or a vacuum (incandescent bulbs). Instead light is emitted from electrons moving around a semiconductor structure.
2. Are Outdoor LED Bulbs Environmentally Friendly?
LED lights tend to use one-tenth of the wattage of standard incandescent, one-third of a halogen bulb, and at least half as much as compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs. This means if you use 60W light bulbs at the moment, you only need a 6W LED bulb as replacement. By using less energy, it means LEDs have a smaller carbon footprint than traditional or current bulbs. This is why LED bulbs are not being phased out by the EU, unlike incandescent bulbs which can only be bought for industrial use and halogen bulbs which are to be phased out by 2018.
3. Will Outdoor LEDs Save Me Money?
When selecting LED outdoor lighting, it is important to consider how many lights you need, for what purposes and how long they will be on for. For example, there is quite a difference in terms of energy usage and long-term cost for occasional party lights or strip lighting for special occasions and night lights used to illuminate a garden on a regular or even daily basis. As our LED bulbs use 1/10th of the electricity, those who switch to them find they save up to hundreds of pounds a year on their utility bills. Finally, these bulbs need replacing less as the average LED Lights lifespan is roughly 25 years.
To help you test the cost savings a switch to LEDs might bring you, we have developed a LEDLightingenergysavingcalculator.
4. Are Outdoor LED Lights Safe to Use?
Yes, Unlike with other light bulbs, especially fluorescent lights, LEDs are not associated with any health or behavioural issues and contain no toxic substances. As with any electrical appliance, outdoor lights should be checked and tested prior to long-term use. Regular maintenance is a must including checking the wiring between lights to ensure there is no damage.
